What does "contingency" on my thermostat does this mean?

I have a non-programmable thermostat White-Rodgers 1F89 No-211. One of the settings is "Emergency "……. When and why would it? Is it good or bad for the system? I have tried to find it in their online manual ….. but could find no answer. Thank you.

. This is an attitude that you can use an emergency heating source (if you have one) in systems that two heat sources have. Normally, the secondary (emergency) source of heat is electric.
